My vampires tend to be a little different than traditional stories and general media. I classify them into several different categories depending on breed. Some are very powerful, capable of doing great things, while other species are weak and cannot go into the public eye without drawing attention. While the differences abound, there are a few characteristics that draw all the species into one race.
Drinking Blood: (Note: This does not apply to the recently introduced Crossbacks) The first key similarity is the fact that all vampires must drink blood in order to survive. While different vampires require different amounts and volume of feeding, all of the creatures must have it in order to survive. Vampires are also drawn to the smell and taste of blood. This also makes them more aggressive when feeding. Some vampires are more easily tempted than others. Vampires can drink the blood of animals to sustain them, but most of the creatures feel the blood tastes foul and will not consume it unless no other is available. Vampires cannot drink the blood of the deceased. (More about this below).
Resting: All vampires must rest. Depending on the vampire this can range for up to fourteen hours or it can be as little as two. The frequency also varies. Most vampires rest daily, as they are limited to a dark area, most likely a shut-in room where no light can enter. Other vampires will stay awake, despite the sunlight that may be lingering nearby. These vampires will go almost two days without resting. The rarest of vampires, the Greater Overlords, can even go up to six days without resting.
Regeneration: All vampires share the ability to regenerate. When a vampire is wounded, they are able to heal to the fullest extent no matter how devastating the wound. A vampire cannot regenerate a limb. In order for the regeneration to take place, the vampire must be resting and asleep. The regeneration potency varies depending on the vampire, as well as the amount of time resting. The more severe the wound, the longer rest time is needed. Vampires usually adjust their resting time according to this factor. A vampire cannot recover any wounds until they are sleeping. Their ability to heal is limited to this.
Spawning: Not all vampires possess the ability to create another vampire. In fact, the majority are not able to do it. All of the Greater and Lesser Overlords do possess the power. Most reported spawings seem to be caused by Blood Revenants and Savagers. There have been no recorded spawnings caused by Purgs. When a vampire sinks their fangs into a victim, they are able to inject them (through the fangs) with a venom known as Sania. This is a conscious decision and cannot be accidentally done. Once a victim is injected, they will die within minutes and become reanimated the next night. During this time, the sun will have no effect on their unconscious body. When darkness falls on the second night, they will open their eyes and be a new creature.
Abilities: To some extent, all vampires have special abilities, whether it is telekinesis, change form, or enhanced strength. All of these powers draw from the vampire’s physical capacity. When a vampire uses their abilities, it will take a toll on them much like mortals tire when running. After so long, the vampire will collapse if their abilities are constantly used. This also makes resting important. Again, some vampires have a greater capacity than others.
Lyluss: These rules do not apply to the Soul-Embracer species of vampires. When a vampire looks upon the church of Lyluss they will not see it as mortar and stone, but rather a bright, white light. The pain will be great (some feel more than others depending on species) and the vampire will be forced to look away. If the vampire is forced to stare, their eyes will eventually burst and turn to liquid. This is the same for Lyluss’ symbols. When it comes to touching Lyluss’ church and medallions the effects are just as devastating. Vampires' skin, bones, muscle, etc. will burn until there is nothing left. This also goes for blessed holy water of Lyluss. If a vampire ingests holy water or if it is infected some other way (tipped on an arrow or stabbed with a blade laced with holy water) the vampire will most likely die, as it will attack the heart. If a vampire holds a vial of the holy water, or if they hold a holy trinket or medallion in a cloth or some protective shield, they will feel a slight vibration from the object.
Sunlight: This does not apply to Greater Overlords. Vampires are cursed by the sunlight, as well as the warmth to their skin. If the sunlight touches a vampire’s flesh it will instantly start to burn until there is nothing left but ash.Vampires who are caught in the sun will never survive longer than about ten seconds. The pain will be too much for any vampire to move into cover. The heat generated by the sun is amplified many times to what a normal mortal will feel. Since vampires do not sweat, they have no way of cooling off from the heat. The few vampires that stay awake during the day will have to contend with this. When a vampire is resting, they do not feel the heat, regardless of how thin the walls are.
General Physical Issues: Vampires are not required to eat or drink other than blood. Although they are able to drink and eat, the food is consumed by their blood stream before it makes it to the intestines. The vampires never make waste. Vampires do not breathe, but are able to suck in air and blow it out if they wish. A vampire’s heart does beat, pushing blood around the body, but it is not needed to stay alive. Vampires do not grow hair. Any that was on their bodies when they were spawned is what remains. If the hair is cut, it will grow back with the regeneration process when the vampire rests. A vampire’s reproductive organs cease to function when they are spawned. Although sex is completely possible, it is impossible to bear children as a vampire. Vampires do not age, so therefore are immortal.
Death and Dying: When a vampire dies, their entire body is consumed in bright, white flames that are quickly turned to ash. This is all that remains of a vampire other than a Greater Overlord. A Greater Overlord’s heart is, if damaged, rejoined, then crystallized and is buried in the ash when they die. A vampire ultimately dies when their heart receives some sort of damage. It must be extreme, usually being severed in two. As soon as this happens, the vampire will catch fire. This is done by a direct stab wound most of the time. Also, a vampire can consume Lylussian water and the acidic power of the blessed liquid will melt the heart, achieving the same effect. Also, vampires who are struck by the sun or who enter a Lylussian temple will burn to death until the heart is consumed. If a vampire doesn’t manage to find blood within their time capacity, their heart will dry up and turn to ash, thus killing them as well. Vampires cannot drink the blood of dead bodies. Once blood is congealed it acts like poison, but the vast majority of vampires can tell the difference in good blood and bad blood.
